Most Unusual Company Grade Federal Officer's Civil War Kepi, with green piping. Fine quality blue wool body. Rises to 3" at the front. Two bands of green 1/8" worsted piping around top of base. Two bands of green worsted piping vertically at front back and both sides. Single band of green worsted piping around edge of crown and two strips of green worsted piping in classic quatrefoil form in center of crown. 1/2" tarred leather chinstrap, apparently missing small piece at end and now pinned in place. No adjusting buckle or adjusting loops. Cuff size staff officer's side buttons. Tarred leather visor with stitched, tarred leather edge binding. Brown polished cotton lining with quilting in the crown. Embossed in the center of the crown "Horstmann Bros. & Co. / Military Furnishings / Fifth & Cherry St. / Philadelphia." Interior of the hat shows some honest wear including the embossing. 1 1/4" brown Moroccan leather sweatband with waffle like pattern. Hat is in near perfect condition, showing just some honest wear, with the exception of an area on the right side, behind the chinstrap button, which is stained / faded and the sweatband at that point is dark stained with a 3" X 1/2" section rotted away where it joins the body of the hat. A claim we rarely make, but appears to be the result of being blood stained. Likely worn by either a sharpshooter or possibly medical officer. The only example we've ever seen and a very rare and intriguing Federal officer's kepi.
