    Description

Most Rare C. 1860 Single Shot Percussion Pistol Signed "J. C. Short" Tyler, Tx. One of the Founders of the Tyler Texas Confederate Ordnance Works. Interestingly Short advertised in 1861 that he made fine rifles that were "warranted to kill an Abolitionist at 400 yards". Additionally, in an ad dated August 1, 1861 Short advertises that he manufactures "a variety of single pistols", with this doubtless being one of them. Short joined a partnership in May of 1862 with William S. N. Briscoe, and Col. George Yarborough to supply arms to the State of Texas. Under this partnership, by October 1863 only two guns had been manufactured and by November 1863 the Confederate government took over proprietor ship and consolidated the armory into the Tyler Texas Ordnance Works. This is one of but a handful of guns known signed by Short himself and was discovered in Whitney, Tx., C. 1970., with an accompanying letter detailing its lineage. 9 1/4" overall with 5 7/8" round barrel with flat rib on the top and patent breech, signed in die stamped letters "J. C. Short.". Absolutely authentic. The barrel is .44 caliber and rifled. Sighted front and rear with the front sight being a silver blade and the rear v notch sight on the rear top portion of the frame. All iron frame with internal box lock. Heavy iron trigger guard with the trigger pull adjustable with a small external screw. The hammer affixed with an engraved spanner nut. Saw handle like one piece grip of finely figured burl wood, with a transverse screw from the back of the grip to the trigger guard extension. Iron flat cap butt affixed with three small screws, one missing, which incorporates a spring loaded, hinged cap box. Single iron ramrod ferrule and what appears to be a period brass tipped rod. All metal smooth and gray, untouched. Absolutely no rust or pitting. Mechanically fine with excellent bore. The nipple has been removed but the threads are fine. A rare opportunity and a significant and important addition to any Texas or Confederate collection.
