Medal of Honor Winner Dr. Mary Edwards Walker: Presentation Microscope and Medal. Mary Edwards Walker (1832-1919) is famous primarily for her efforts in the Civil War to give medical treatment to the wounded. She was captured by Confederate forces after crossing enemy lines to treat wounded civilians, was accused of being a Union spy and sent to a POW facility in Richmond, prior to being exchanged. After the war, she was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor (the only woman to receive the award and only one of eight civilians). Her post-war efforts centered on promoting prohibition and women's suffrage. This lot includes a brass presentation microscope in a cedarwood case. The manufacturer was P. Waechter of Berlin and the serial number of the brass instrument is #4329. The steel base of the microscope is inscribed: "Presented To Dr. Mary E. Walker By American Women Syracuse Medical College". The case includes two lenses, two eyepieces, a tweezer, seven glass slides (one blank) plus a small wooden box with three additional eyepieces (marked 4, 7 and 10) and a gold & enamel G.A.R. lapel badge. Both the small box and the wooden case lock, but the joints to the bottom of the case are coming apart and need repair. The microscope itself appears to be in great condition. It is accompanied by a boxed medal presented to Walker. The medal has one bar with her name, a hanger marked W.C.U. (perhaps Women's Christian Union?) and a metal drop with religious symbols and an inscription that roughly translates to "St. John's Association Rock Island, Ill. 1880". The inside lid of the box has a photo of an unidentified building and an engraved copper plaque that reads: "Honorable Guest/ Presented To/ Dr. Mary E. Walker/ For her/ Distinguished Service/ To The Men of the/ Union Army". Two interesting association pieces for a feminist pioneer, in the same league with Clara Barton.
