Magnificent Set of Cased French Percussion Dueling/ Target Pistols by Caron of Paris C. 1840. Guns 16½" overall with .45 caliber deeply rifled octagonal barrels. The barrels retain 95% of the original mirror blue, just some minor fading. Guns numbered 1 and 2 on the patent breeches which are decoratively engraved. Adjustable triggers, silver wedge escutcheons, mechanically perfect with mint bores. All steel mountings are profusely engraved with scroll and geometric motifs and retain most of the original case color. Forestock deeply relief engraved with overlaid oak leaves, finely checkered grips, relief carved leaf motif around the base of the grips. Beautifully grained wood stocks about perfect, retaining most of the original varnish, with just a few light, indeed negligible, handling marks. Interior of the case is about perfect, retaining all of the original accessories also about mint. Bullet mold, ladle, oiler, cap and patch boxes, ebony handled screwdriver and nipple wrench, cleaning rod with jag, ramrod, wooden mallet bullet starter and exquisite little copper flask with central motif of a cherub and a deer. Interior brass fittings and green baize lining also perfect. The exterior of the black ebonized case is also exceptional, with all brass bound corners and edges, elaborate inlaid pierced brass key escutcheon on the front, and elaborate brass inlaid panels on the lid (now having taken in a copper color because of tarnish and aged varnish) with multiple piercings. Just some minor repair work to some of the brass band inlay around the edges, minor. A truly exceptional cased pair of French pistols for both quality and condition.
