    Description

MacArthur Landing Flag -LEYTE - USS Nashville (CL-47) & LCM-284-2. USS Nashville (CL-43) was a Brooklyn-class cruiser commissioned in 1938. She served in the Atlantic until transferred to the Pacific to escort the Doolittle Raid. She was often selected to serve as a flagship; twice for task force duty. In May 1942, she was appointed the flagship of Task Force 8; tasked with the defense of the Aleutians, and again, for Task Force 67 during the Guadalcanal Campaign. She would serve as General Douglas MacArthur's flagship three times in 1944; in April at the amphibious operations at Hollandia, in September for the invasion of Morotai, Dutch East Indies, and finally in October for the invasion of Leyte in the Philippines.

The flag is a cotton 31" X 57", 48-star, dye printed starfield, sewn stripe flag finished with a header and two grey metal wartime grommets. The flag is inscribed, "20 OCT 44" and "WET FEET (above a drawing of two feet and water drops) and "NASHVILLE 284-2 TFB." The date & feet are a reference to the date Gen. MacArthur went ashore on Leyte. The numeral "284-2" is likely the hull number for the LCM (Landing Craft Mechanized) which conveyed General MacArthur from Nashville to the beach.

On October 20,1944, General Douglas MacArthur observe the Leyte landings from the USS Nashville. The naval bombardment of the Leyte shore commenced at 06:00. The 6th Army began to land at 10:00. Within an hour, most of the beachheads were secure and by 13:30 it was determined that MacArthur could safely land. He departed Nashville in the LCM with his staff and the President of the Philippines Sergio Osmeña. This departure was documented by both US Army Signal Corps and US Navy photographers.

AS the LCM neared the shore, Gen. MacArthur made a dramatic landing through the surf onto Red Beach at Leyte and announced to the populace the beginning of their liberation: "People of the Philippines, I have returned! By the grace of Almighty God, our forces stand again on Philippine soil."

This is an opportunity for a MacArthur, Leyte, USS Nashville and Liberation of the Philippines collector.

LCMs of the US Navy did not accrue awards and campaign credit.

Condition: The flag of MacArthur's LCM is in good condition. It is used, worn and soiled but otherwise complete.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
