    L. C. Smith Monogram Grade Double-Barrel Shotgun With Case and Accessories. 20 gauge. 2¾" chambers. Serial number FWE 106051 (1928 manufacture period). 30" Whitworth Fluid Compressed Steel barrels with tapered flat matte vent rib. Barrel marked "Made to Order by the Hunter Arms Co. Inc. Fulton. N.Y." Hunter One trigger. Automatic ejectors. About seven pounds total weight. LOP to the rubber recoil pad 13½", DAC 1 9/16", DAH 2½". Case colored action ornately engraved with two birds and floral decoration; breech end of the barrels with modest engraving. Blued barrels. Finely checkered imported walnut pistol grip stock with matching checkered fore end. Owner's initials "MDS" engraved on a gold escutcheon inlaid on the lower edge of the butt. This beautiful shotgun is in excellent condition with virtually all of the case color remaining on the action, bright blue on the barrels with only minor wear at the muzzle and with only light wear to the wood furniture.

This exquisite shotgun was formerly owned by Major Monte D. Stone. While not much is known about his military career he was born about 1891 and was obviously well-heeled as he called the New York Athletic Club his home and obviously had discriminating tastes in shotguns. His shotgun is housed in a fitted leather case, compartmented for a variety of accessories. A brass plaque on the lid is engraved "Major Monte Stone/ Box 116 N.Y. Ath. Club/ New York/ N.Y." The case includes wooden cleaning rods, tools, a variety of wire brushes, cleaning attachments and a glass oiler bottle. An extraordinary shotgun with provenance that begs further research.
