    Description

James Longstreet: Autographed Account of Appomattox. 2-page Autographed Letter Signed by Confederate General James Longstreet (1821-1904) relative to a conference held between himself, General Mahone and Robert E. Lee prior to the surrender at Appomattox. Writing from Gainesville, Georgia on August 26, 1877, Longstreet responds to a request for information from William H. Stewart of Portsmouth, Virginia. Longstreet, who is credited with advising Lee to surrender to Grant believing the terms would be fair, apologizes for not having taken notes of the meeting or remembering it with exactitude. "As I remember the substance, General Lee expressed to General Mahone and myself the difficulties of his position, and concluded his remarks by saying 'It is impossible for us to escape the enemy.' I am of the opinion that General Mahone suggested an interview with General Grant, looking for the best terms of surrender. I know that I made a similar suggestion before General Mahone was sent for... My recollection was that General Lee made some objection to negotiating for surrender, expressing his apprehensions of the shock that such result would be to the people. As well as I can remember the substance of our replies to this was that his responsibilities to the people ceased when he assured us that is was 'Impossible for him to escape.' If the proposition was correct as he stated it, he, General Lee, had no right to sacrifice another life." One minor ink-burn hole near bottom; else, clean and bold. Longstreet, an exemplary corps commander, disagreed with Lee on tactics to be employed ay Gettysburg and supervised the disastrous Pickett's Charge.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
