Irish Brigade, 69th Regiment, New York State Volunteers, Civil War ID Disc. The reverse is stamped, "Lieut. J. M. Burns / Co. F /69th / Reg. /N.Y.S.V. / Brooklyn". The obverse has a an American eagle with outstretched wings, and "War of 1861" above, and "United States", below. The 1.125" copper disc is holed at 12 o'clock.

Joseph M Burns, a native of Scotland, of Irish descent, enlisted on September 12, 1861 in Brooklyn, New York as a 2nd Lieutenant at the age of 21. He was wounded on June 30, 1862 at the Battle of White Oak Swamp, Virginia and discharged May, 27, 1863. Burns later served as an officer in the United States Navy.

The Battle of White Oak Swamp took place on June 30, 1862 in Henrico County, Virginia as part of the Seven Days Battles (Peninsula Campaign). As the Union Army of the Potomac retreated southeast toward the James River, its rearguard under Maj. Gen. William B. Franklin stopped Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's divisions at the White Oak Bridge crossing, resulting in an artillery duel, while the main Battle of Glendale raged two miles farther south. Because of this Union resistance Jackson was prevented from joining the consolidated assault on the Union Army that had been ordered by General Robert E. Lee, producing an inconclusive result at Glendale, but one in which the Union Army avoided destruction and was able to assume a strong defensive position at Malvern Hill.
