William H. Jackson Image of Trapper and Guide "Beaver Dick" Leigh ca 1880s. Born in Manchester England, Richard Leigh ran away from home at the age of 16 to join the Hudson's Bay Company. After a few years exploring and trapping the American west, Leigh made his way to the Teton Valley in 1870, becoming one of the first settlers in Jackson Hole. When the Hayden Survey of 1872 explored northwestern Wyoming, "Beaver Dick" Leigh led the explorers into the Teton Valley and to Jackson Hole. The survey team, accompanied by photographer William Henry Jackson - the first great photographer of the West - were so impressed by Leigh's guide and his Shoshone wife that they named Jenny Lake and Leigh Lake for them. Impressive Jackson image of Beaver Dick and his family gathered outside their teepee. Measures approximately 14 x 11".
