Description

War of 1812 Anti-British Cartoon Exploits the Abominable Practice of Scalp-Taking for Reward. Titled "A Scene On The Frontiers As Practiced by the Humane British And Their Worthy Allies!" the cartoon calls attention to the British soldiers' ghastly practice of encouraging Native Americans to take American scalps for bounty during the War of 1812. On the right, a British officer receives a bloody scalp from a Native American carrying a sign on his flintlock which says, "Reward For 16 Scalps." To the lower left, another Native American is seen scalping a fallen American soldier. The satire, originally created by William Charles, was known to have been copied in reverse by an unknown engraver "LC." This example is one of those copies. 10" x 13" (sight) framed to an overall 16" x 19.25". The print has moderate age and shows signs of perhaps some past restoration. It has not been examined out of the frame. Although the frame has been chipped in the upper left corner, the pieces are recovered, and will be included with the lot for future repair by the new owner.
