    Description

Very Scarce C. 1885 Portable Photographer's or Dentist's Headrest. Portable version as would have been used by photographers or dentists in the field. Made to fit over the back of a chair, with top splat of a chair no more than 1 1/2' thick with adjustments for both height and the cant of the actual headrest. Headrest a curved straw filled cushion covered with brown wool showing wear with a tear at top and side. The apparatus itself in near perfect condition retaining 80% of the original black paint. Marked on the back in block letters with the maker's name, "O. C. White". Otis C. White was a dental surgeon in Hopkinton, Mass. who founded the company in 1883. A scarce and unusual piece of equipment that doubtless saw use by both traveling photographers and dentists during the late 19th century.
