U.S. Model 1881 Indian Scout Dress Helmet.

Black wool cloth over a cork body with patent leather trim. Gilt-brass Indian scout side buttons, front plate and plume base. The front plate has applied silver crossed arrows on the shield denoting Indian Scouts. The helmet is complete with red and white horsehair plume, lanyard cords and tassels. The inner base of the plume holder is maker marked Horstmann Brothers & Co. Two-inch wide russet-brown sweatband with size 7 paper label. Housed in a custom display case with stained wood base and plexiglass cover. An excellent display for an Indian War era collection.

Condition: Trace of old repair at the inner socket base; small area of loss to the patent leather crown band on the left side near the button, otherwise excellent.
