    Description

    U.S. Model 1881 1st Cavalry Officer's Dress Helmet. Black wool-covered cork body with two-piece brass eagle front plate displaying the German silver number "1" on the shield. The helmet exhibits gold knotted cords at the front and back with interlocking brass-chain chin strap. Lightly faded yellow horsehair plume extends from the spike. The interior is lined with white silk which exhibits areas of wear, tan leather sweatband shows staining at the forehead and a few small rips. The front visor exhibits areas of breakage, the remainder of the body is solid.

    The 1st Cavalry served in Arizona and saw action fighting the Apaches in 1881. Transferred to the Department of the Dakota in 1884 with elements stationed at Fort Custer, Fort Maginnis, Fort Ellis, Fort Assinniboine, and Fort Keogh.
