    Description

US 'M1890' .45-70 Breech Loading .45-70 Carbine. Although verging on the apocryphal, this is, in fact, and distinct model resulting from alterations performed at Springfield Armory C. 1890, and is readily identifiable by the distinctive rear sight protector barrel band. Most were also issued with a front sight cover which this specimen lacks. Breech door dated 1873, serial #414194, low arch breech, three click tumbler. Retains the original saddle bar but the ring is missing. The inlet for the butt swivel has been professionally, if not arsenal, plugged. Still retains the original three piece carbine cleaning rod in the butt compartment. Overall an exceptionally nice gun with all metal being smooth and dark with absolutely no rust or pitting and traces of color on the breech door. Excellent markings, mechanically perfect, excellent bore. Wood excellent with just a few scattered, very minor dents with nice patina. There is a name, obviously period, neatly die stamped in 1/8" high letters, on either side of the buttstock by the buttplate. A very nice example of this, actually rather scarce, .45-70 carbine.
