US M1866 2d Allin Conversion .50-70 Rifle with Unusual Markings. Fine overall condition. Metal general smooth and gray with just some very light scattered surface rust on the barrel that would clean very nicely with no pitting. Excellent markings with standard eaglehead and 1866 on breechblock, lock dated 1864. The gun is complete and original in every respect and a truly exceptional example. Mechanically perfect, deep crisp markings, and about mint bore. The anomalous markings include on the frame behind the breech block an additional eaglehead and D 3B, the side of the frame bears the Roman numeral XII and tiny letters ss, significance unknown. Stock excellent with nice dark smooth patina. Just some normal wear with a few scattered dents and scratches, no visible inspectors' marks. Accompanied by the original US marked socket bayonet. A very fine specimen with markings we've not previously encountered.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
