Description

U.S. Infantry Officer's Kepi with the Original Insignia and Rain Cover, Circa 1865-1870. The finest example we've ever seen for both quality and condition. Exquisite quality blue wool rising to 2½" in the front with the original gold bullion embroidered insignia, with silver numeral for the 36th Infantry Regt. Original, lightly tarred, 3/8" leather chinstrap with two adjusting loops and eagle I buttons. Thick, unbound, lightly tarred, leather visor with beaded border along the top edge. 1½" textured light brown leather sweat band, black silk lining. The hat is overall about mint, just a few moth nips at the left rear, else perfect, really stunning. The hat is accompanied by the original oil cloth rain cover that is in excellent condition, and clearly original to this hat. Absolutely as fine as you will ever see.
