Description

Unusual Civil War Style U.S. Cavalry Officer's Saber that we Believe to be Slightly Post War. 32" curved blade near mint with 1½" pen knife ricasso, and the fuller extending to within 3" of the tip. Obverse etched on a frosted background with scroll work and arms panoply with an American shield. Reverse with scrollwork, large block US and etched on the ricasso, "W. Sauerbier/ Newark, N. J." The blade is gorgeous retaining 95% of the original mint luster and just a few tiny patches of salt and peppering. The hilt is unique in our experience, and rather crudely fabricated entirely of cast iron. Scrolls where the branches join the guard and at the pommel cap, which displays a rudimentary representation of oak leaves. Inside face of the guard with American shield and acanthus leaves and berries. Hilt overall with deep dark smooth age patina. Leather wrapped grip perfect with loose single strand brass wire, and one remaining strand of twisted brass wire. Steel scabbard smooth and dark with brass mounts and absolutely no dents. Scallop edged throat, eagle with shield and motto on the top mount, American shield on the middle mount. The drag is cast with scrollwork and arms with American shield on the obverse, and scrollwork with a mounted rider at the bottom on the reverse, again most unusual. An anomalous and intriguing circa 1865 U.S. cavalry officer's saber.
