Unaltered US M1873 .45-70 Carbine # 40958. Certainly one of the finest condition examples we've ever catalogued with serial number falling into the pre-Custer range. Barrel retains 95% of the original blue, as does the band, band spring, and correct rear sight. There are no barrel proofs as is correct. Receiver retains much of the original dark case-hardened finish. Marked on the door with eaglehead, crossed arrows and 1873. Lockplate and hammer also with much original finish with date 1873. Mechanically perfect, excellent markings, near perfect bore. Trigger guard, butt plate, sling bar, and ring also retain substantial original finish, just showing minor wear. Wood excellent with deep crisp ESA cartouche and crisp P cartouche behind the trigger guard. Wood overall with dark rich patina. Just a few tiny chips at top sling bar mount and front of trigger guard where someone apparently attempted to disassemble the gun, subsequent to typical wood shrinkage around the metal parts. With that exception the gun appears to be completely untouched. A really exceptional example of this scarce and desirable US cavalry carbine.
