Two US M1860 Staff & Field Officers' Swords. A near mint example by E. A. Armstrong/ Chicago C. 1895. Regulation form, made without folding counterguard with just a rudimentary curved brass extension on the reverse. Flat blade with deep etch with US, shield, and floral/ scrollwork on the obverse and similar work with spread wing eagle with motto on the reverse. Just one small chip missing from the leather wrap at the bottom of the grip else overall about perfect. Regulation brass mounted steel scabbard with just a few minor stains, otherwise also about perfect. Also, a very scarce C. 1872 example with heavy blade diamond shaped in cross section. Blade about mint retaining 95% of the original luster. Etch includes scroll work, American shields with flags and old English US on obverse, with shields/ flags and tucked wing eagle on the reverse. The base of the obverse also bears the script etching "National Armory". Doubtless Springfield where these swords were produced beginning C. 1872, but the only example we've seen that does not include the word "Springfield". Hilt is about perfect retaining most of the original gilt with fixed reverse counterguard with shield surmounting arms panoply. The wooden grip is perfect, however, all of the leather and wire wrap is missing. Regulation scabbard with brass mounts, which are perfect retaining most of the original gilt. The scabbard itself has a considerable amount of bubbling on the nickel finish, several large areas where the nickel has flaked of and there is light surface, and a couple of minor bends between the middle mount and the tip. Obviously in need of some restoration. Nevertheless a very scarce sword and worthy of the effort.
