    Description

Stereoview of Cavalry Troops, Fort Apache, Arizona Territory, ca. 1870s. On May 16, 1870, an army post was established near the present town of Whiteriver in order to assist the White Mountain Apache Tribe to peacefully protect their lands. That same month, the post and surrounding area was designated as a reservation for the tribe. Located in the heart of Apache country, Fort Apache was an isolated outpost of Anglo expansion. Fort Apache is perhaps most widely recognized in association with the famous renegade leaders from various Apache bands, such as Geronimo and Cochise, who were pursued by the soldiers from Fort Apache and the White Mountain Apache Scouts, including Chiefs Alchise and Diable. It was these men who were instrumental in bringing a lasting peace to the Southwest.

Arizona scene photographed by H. Buchman at Fort Apache depicts the barracks and three military buildings in background and the Soldiers in foreground. Note: Period ink verso "#198 Parade Fort Apache, Three companies are represented. Two of Cavalry and one of Infantry. Instead of 40 men in line there ought to be 189, the balance are on detached service, baking, cooking, carpentering, gardening, herding, an guard and I can keep in for a week. So you wonder why the American army is not well drilled? The two houses are the two Cavalry Co. quarters." Measures approximately 7" x 4".

    Condition:
Very good-fine, mount has very light soiling, and chip at top right.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
