    Signed Cabinet Card Photograph of General George Crook, 1882. George Crook (1828-90) was a graduate of West Point, 1852. During the Civil War, Crook commanded a regiment of Ohio volunteers as colonel. After the war, he operated against the Paiute and Snake in Idaho. He also fought against Apache Indians in Arizona where he was promoted to brigadier general in 1873. He was engaged in the hard-fought Sioux War of 1876. In Arizona in 1883, Crook led an expedition into the mountains against a Chiricahua band of the Apache and finally succeeded in persuading Geronimo to return to the reservation in 1884. Later, Geronimo broke his pact and escaped, which led to censure of Crook's policies and which led to his resignation in Arizona. Until his death, Crook was major general and commander of the Division of the Missouri.

USA" Typed pasted note on verso of photograph reads "#1 Brigadier General George Crook. Omaha, Nebraska, 1882. Writing on front belongs to Col. C. C. Smith. Crook's signature on reverse of photo." Measures approximately 4.25" x 6.5".

    Good, some foxing, paper remnants on image, verso has paper missing where signed.
