Remarkable Archive of Photographic Portraits of Annapolis Midshipmen and Scenic Views of the Academy, Taken between 1870 and 1894. These consist of photographic prints, as well as both wet plate and dry plate glass negatives. The images are the work of Washington, D.C. photographer Levin P. Handy, who was the nephew of, and successor to, noted Civil War photographer Mathew Brady.

This historic and artistic archive exhibits a wide variety of Naval Academy uniforms, accouterments, weapons etc., used by midshipmen during this period, with many of the subjects identified by name and class date, and accompanied by period photographic prints, along with the original glass negatives. Doubtless many of these young men became prominent U.S. Navy officers, seeing service in the Spanish-American War and World War I, providing a wealth of research opportunities.

There are some 275 negatives in total, accompanied by many period photographic prints, with most being approximately 5" x 8" and in excellent condition. Of special interest are views of Annapolis sports teams, such as baseball and fencing, a view of the boat basin in the Severn River, with large ships at dock and midshipmen in boats with oars held upright, ready for fleet drill, and much more.

The collection was acquired directly from Handy's lineal descendants and represents a fascinating and historically important archive, with endless possibilities for research and publication.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
