    Description

Relic: Piece of War Club of King Philip. Relic from the Collection of J. S. Reigart. The relic is a 1" diameter wood disk in a cork sealed 19th century glass bottle. The bottle also contains a sheet of paper upon which is written, "Piece of the Handle of the War Club of King Philip". Metacomet, who adopted the English name Philip, was a war chief, or sachem, of the Wampanoag Indians. Originally he lived in harmony with English colonists and encouraged trade. When the Iroquois Confederation pushed east and the Puritan expansion pushed west, Metacomet pushed back in order to maintain his people's lands. The conflict, known as King Philip's War, pitted the Wampanoags against the colonists. Hunted down, Metacomet was shot on August 12, 1676 in the Miery Swamp of Rhode Island. His head was mounted on a pike and his body quartered and hung on trees. His family was sold into slavery. The relic is in excellent condition.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
