Really Stunning, Custom-Engraved, Colt Single Action Army Revolver, #161067 Matching. The accompanying Colt letter states the gun was shipped June 19, 1895 to McClean Brothers & Rigg, New York with a 7½" barrel and blue finish, in caliber .44-40. The barrel length is now 4¾" and, of course, the finish is nickel. The front sight and crown to factory standards, although the barrel could also have been replaced during the period of use. The engraving is truly spectacular, and exhibits some details we have not previously encountered. Nearly full coverage on barrel, frame, cylinder, backstrap and trigger guard bow, with floral/ scroll work and the following panels; "Colt Frontier Six Shooter" on the left side of the barrel, a howling wolf on both sides of the frame, a deep relief steer head on the frame behind the ejector rod housing, a mounted cowboy and a steer on a textured background on the left recoil shield, and a horse head inside a horseshoe at the top of the backstrap. The most remarkable detail is the loading gate that has been sculpted into a profile bust of an American Indian. All work exquisitely executed by what was obviously a highly skilled and experienced hand. The grips are modern faux ivory replacements. Although they look fine, they should clearly be upgraded to a correct period set. The gun is in overall absolutely mint condition, and a most impressive engraved 1st generation single action.
