Presentation US M1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword 1902. Exceptional quality sword in overall near mint condition, retaining 99% of the original gilt. Regulation style hilt, mint, with deep relief eagle and American flag panoply on the guard. Folding counterguard with American shield and stand of arms surrounded by oak and acanthus leaf wreath. Beautifully inscribed on the underside of the counterguard "Presented by/Wakefield Council/Knights of Columbus/May 6, 1902". Sharkskin grip with brass wire wrap perfect. 31" blade also near mint with just a few tiny spots of surface rust near the tip, else perfect, retaining most of the original lustre. Profusely and exquisitely etched for 2/3 its length with floral/scroll motifs, arms panoplies, and American eagle with motto on obverse, along with maker's name at ricasso "Oak Hall Clothing Co. Boston, Mass." This was a pseudonym used by the renowned military goods manufacturer G. W. Simmons. The obverse of the blade with similar etched motifs including central panel etched in Old English script "Capt. John H. McMahon". All blade etching also highlighted with finely executed hand engraving. Steel scabbard with large profusely pierced brass mounts, which also retaining all of the original gilt. Scabbard bright and clean with just two very shallow dents, really negligible. A beautiful high grade example of this US regulation sword worthy of further research.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
