    Description

Manuel Becerra Document Signed. 4pp. including integral blank, 6.5" x 8", with Civil Court of Goliad heading. Goliad, December 21, 1834. Becerra's signature is bold and bears his rubric; the letter is in very fine condition.

Manuel Becerra served as the first Ayuntamiento (City Secretary) of Goliad in 1820, signed a peace treaty with Karankawa and Coco Indians, and held various public offices through 1835. With this document, civil judge Becerra notifies Juan María Valdez that he has been "constitutionally elected as Alcalde... You will report to this office the first of January." On page two, Valdez responds: "I understand I am elected by the majority of voters as Alcalde of this municipality... [I] would not be upright if I did not reveal that ... I was a colonist of the empresario Citizen Santiago Power [James Powers] and belong to that jurisdiction where a municipal body also resides." From the Taking of Texas Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
