Description
M1866 Winchester Saddle Ring Carbine Caliber .44 Rimfire, #28445, Manufactured Late 1869, with an Interesting History. All metal smooth and dark, the gun overall completely untouched including great patina on the brass frame and butt plate, which bears a matching number. All wood showing heavy weathering and use, near relic condition, although what remains is quite sound. Mainspring is broken and action partially frozen with several frame screws apparently being correct replacements. The gun is inscribed on the left side of the frame, "J. R. Evans/ Tazewell/ Tenn.", absolutely authentic and clearly contemporary to the gun's manufacture and use. James R. Evans joined the 4th Tenn. Cav. (U.S.) May 18, 1864, age 18, and was wounded at Sugar Creek December 26, 1864. Recovering in hospitals in Knoxville and Nashville, Evans rejoined his unit July 10, 1865, and mustered out July 12. Evans and his wife Charity are on the 1870 census in Tazewell, and subsequently appear in the 1880 and 1920 census in Texas, with him dying in 1921. A character laden early M1866 with a fascinating history.Auction Info
