Louis Rott: His Appointment as a First Sergeant, Company K, Seventh Cavalry, Signed By Lt. Colonel G. A. Custer. This 1874 promotion occurred in the fourth year of Rott's five-year enlistment, and is also signed by Lieut. Cook. While Rott's initial tour of duty ended the following year, he would reenlist and once again be assigned to Company K. Rott would be present at Little Big Horn, as part of the detail guarding the pack train under Captain Benteen. Rott saw heavy action in the hill fight after Benteen's men reinforced Major Reno's detachment and assumed a successful defensive position. He survived the battle unscathed, and for the rest of his life would be a harsh critic of Custer's tactics at Little Big Horn. He would tell family members that he believed Custer's personal ambition led him to take unnecessary risks in pursuit of a dramatic victory that would advance his personal fortunes.

After Little Big Horn, Rott would continue to serve with the 7th, most notably in General Nelson Miles' 1877 campaign against Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce, seeing action at Bearpaw Mountain. Following his career in the military, Louis Rott would spend many years as a mounted policeman in New York City.

The Seventh Cavalry commission offered here appears to have been exposed to moisture at some point in its storage, leading to a fading of the original ink. At some later point, a custodian in the family has traced the handwritten portions so that they are now bold and clearly readable, particularly Custer's distinctive signature. The document has been elegantly triple-matted and custom framed, and presents quite nicely for display. Our estimate has taken the condition and tracing into account. 15" x 9.75", framed to 23" x 18".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
