Indian Wars Period Forage Kepi of Lt. Col. Clarence E. Bennett of the 1st California Cavalry.
Wool kepi used by Colonel Clarence E. Bennett. The leather sweat-band is stamped in silver letters "Horstmann Bros & Co/ Military Furnishers/ Philada." The interior of the band is inscribed in ink "Capt CEB". Two small moth holes at the bottom center of the peaked crown, of no particular consequence. Two small infantry cuff buttons secure the leather chin strap & buckle. It remains in outstanding condition.

Bennett graduated West Point on July 1, 1851. He had a long and illustrious career in both the Civil War and frontier. Chronologically, he served during the Mormon Expedition, Fort Laramie in 1860, the local militia in California 1861-1863, Forts Yuma & Craig [fighting marauding Apaches) 1863-1865, Texas reconstruction duty 1865-1869, Dakota Territory 1870-1872 (fighting the Sioux), the Yellowstone Expedition in 1872 and a posting at the Standing Rock Indian Agency. The kepi is circa 1870 from his time in the Dakotas.

A superb archive of research accompanies this kepi and includes Colonel Bennett's service records, a multitude of photocopies of handwritten letters and dispatches; his widow's pension files and transcriptions of battle reports sent by Colonel Bennett during the Civil War where he describes in vivid detail the action between the troops he commands and the Apaches they are fighting.
