Important Medal and Document Grouping of Lt. Col. Edwin Fisher Gardner, Who Rose to the Rank of Deputy Surgeon General of the United States. Gardner has a fascinating history, initially enlisting, at age 18, in the 1st Battalion of Maine Infantry, in the closing days of the Civil War, Gardner subsequently completed medical studies at Harvard, and joined the U.S. Amy as a Surgeon in August of 1876. He was promoted to Major in 1895, and Lt. Col., as Deputy Surgeon General, by Theodore Roosevelt, in 1903. Included with the group are Gardner's Civil War (marked on the rim No 218), Indian War (No 650) and Philippine War (No 12337), campaign medals. Medals are all mint and housed in the original pebbled finish paste board boxes with chest ribbons and original tissue. Each box displays, on the top, the original paper label with the name and number of the medal, exactly as issued. Also included are Gardner's Civil War eagle masthead discharge, his elaborate 18" x 22" membership certificate in the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, signed by Winfield Scott Hancock, #3104, dated in 1884, and his 16" x 21" commission/ appointment as Lieutenant Colonel and Deputy Surgeon General, signed by Theodore Roosevelt as President, and dated September 23, 1903. All documents in perfect condition, the Roosevelt signature bright and crisp. Also included is a photograph of Gardner in civilian clothes in 1892. Great group with the medals being the the finest first issue examples obtainable.
