    Description

Group of Three Nineteenth Century U.S. Helmet Plates. Includes: (1) Very scarce M1872 plate for the spike helmet. Notably different from the much more common 1881 pattern, this early plate incorporates the open work arched banner over the eagle's head, with national motto and wreath surrounding the lower section. About perfect condition with the original mounting fixtures on the reverse and retaining 99% of the original silver. (2) A circa 1885 eagle helmet plate. Likely a militia infantry pattern with crossed rifles and the American shield, and cluster of stars at the top, inpainted. Retains about 60% of the original paint, else perfect with 99% of the gilt wash and the four original fastening wires on the reverse. (3) An unidentified plate, probably circa 1840, 52mm x 56mm, fabricated of very heavy stamped brass with gilt finish. The center portion depicts an eighteenth century military officer in profile (superb detail), with panoply of arms and flags beneath, the entire badge surmounted by a skull. The reverse shows one fastening loop, as well as the remains of what was clearly a pinback fastener. Absolutely exquisite quality in about perfect condition. Nice group. Prov. Flayderman Collection
