    Description

George Armstrong Custer: His Personal Writing Table Dating from his Days as Commander of the 7th Cavalry. This was a style clearly favored by Custer, who is seen sitting at a very similar table in a famous photo taken in his Fort Abraham Lincoln office. While the exact provenance of the present table is lost, the weathered stenciled inscription: "Col. G. A. Custer / 7th (worn center) S. A. / (Illegible) Mich." On the underside of the drawer is self-authenticating. It seems likely that this particular table dates from his earliest days as head of the 7th Cavalry when he was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. It could not be from the Civil War era because Custer was not yet affiliated with the 7th. The weathered patina suggests that the table spent decades in an outbuilding or even out of doors, and is reminiscent of the wooded trunk of Col. Elmer Otis (who succeeded Custer as commander of the 7th) long used to store feed on a farmer's porch (sold by Heritage in our June 10, 2012 auction for $3,585).

The table measures 34.5" x 22.5" x 27.5" tall, and is in basically sound condition, with several cracks across the back of the top as shown. The drawer slides in and out freely. A fine relic from the legendary Civil War hero and Indian-fighter who met his fate at Little Big Horn.
