George Armstrong Custer: A Unique and Personal Artifact, His Personal Bank Book from 1870 with Entries in His Hand. His name on the front cover, not in Custer's hand, "Gen. G. A. Custer," illustrates a popular convention which perhaps tells us a little about Custer's personality. As was the case with many Civil War generals, he had been reduced in rank after the war and was at this time a lieutenant colonel. Most officers in similar situations employed their correct, official rank. However Custer often continued to refer to himself as "General" and certainly never discouraged others from doing so as well.

The accounting entries in the book do not appear to be in his hand; however, there are five lines of expense notations for a St. Louis trip on the last page which are handwritten by Custer. 4.25" x 6.5" and in excellent condition but for some worm damage to the leather cover.
