    Description

George Armstrong Custer: A Superb Braided Lock of his Distinctive Blond Hair, with Family Provenance. This beautiful example, length 3" as displayed, was part of the Charles Custer Family Collection. It is accompanied by a 1989 family affidavit obtained when it was first handled by Butterfields, but was actually purchased by the consignor in their 1995 Custer auction featuring the Alex Acevedo Collection (lot 88). The catalog states: "Before Lieutenant Colonel Custer left Fort Abraham Lincoln on his last campaign, his wife had a dream of her husband being scalped by the Indians. Upon her insistence, he cut his hair before his last battle. The locks of his hair that he gave his wife were passed down to his descendants, and only five of these braided locks are known to exist, one of which is offered here."

The lock is accompanied by two affidavits from Richard Custer, great-grandson of George Armstrong Custer's sole surviving brother Nevin. One is handwritten; the other more formal certification was prepared by Butterfields for him to sign in 1989. It was then re-auctioned as part of the Acevedo Collection in 1995.

While any items that belonged to Custer are of great interest to collectors, few could be more personal and evocative than a lock of his fabled blond hair. Variously known as "Long Hair" and "Yellow Hair," Custer sported these striking, long locks which have been made iconic by photographers, artists, and later filmmakers. A very special George Armstrong Custer relic indeed!

    Learn about consigning with us

What I most appreciated was how thorough you were when we initially met, how you were conservative in your estimates, not trying to get me to consign by giving false expectations, and then for delivering above and beyond on your commitment to me of a wonderful marketing campaign and a first rate catalog and photos, all of which resulted in a final total price realized that was nicely higher than what you had told me to expect.
