Frederick Benteen: An Original D. F. Barry Photo of the Controversial Little Big Horn Figure. Benteen is pictured later in life in his general's uniform. Barry's name is imprinted in both the mount and the photo itself. Both are in beautiful condition, the photo measuring 4.875" x 6.75".

Barry writes his own rather eccentric account of the battle on verso, spelling Benteen's name "Benton", which undoubtedly is a deliberate dig since he surely knew the correct spelling. Barry provides some interesting details, such as his account of Capt. DeRudio of Reno's battalion, who was unable to join Reno's retreat to higher ground and hid in the brush until nightfall when he was able to rejoin his troop under cover of darkness. There have been various estimates of just how long it took the Indians to wipe out Custer's command, but DeRudio is quoted as stating that the firing lasted just 35 minutes.
