Exceptional ID'd US M1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword. 30" blade, diamond shaped in cross section, absolutely mint, and etched for half its length with floral/scroll work, arms panoplies and, on the obverse, "Gen. F. P. Maynard" and on the reverse with a spread wing American eagle. Etched maker's mark on the reverse ricasso "B. F. / Haley / New / Market / N. H." Although we have not been able to discover any information on Haley the sword appears to be from the period 1870 - 1880 at the latest, in consideration of the diamond shaped blade. Nor have we been able to identify General Maynard, although evidence would certainly point to him being a New Hampshire militia general. Regulation style hilt with folding counterguard retains 98% of the original gilt. Textured cast silver grip which is wrapped with a 1/16" wide decorated brass band, also perfect. Really superb for both quality and condition. All brass scabbard with regulation style mounts, which retain most of the original gilt, about perfect and most unusual. A really exceptional US sword for quality, condition and rarity.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
