    Description

First to survey the carnage at Little Bighorn

Charles Francis Roe: Equestrian Bronze. Bronze statue of General Charles Frances Roe (1848-1922) on horseback with sword drawn. The base measures 11.75" x 4.75". The work is 16" tall. It is inscribed on the front of the base "Troop A N.G.N.Y. Brooklyn N-Y. January 21-28. 1895." The other inscriptions on the base are: "G. Moretti Sculptor. Cast by the Henry Bonnard Bronze Co. N.Y. 1895". A West Point graduate, Coe served in the Indian Wars from 1868 to 1888. A column under his command was the first to arrive at Little Bighorn after Custer's defeat in 1876. He helped to finance the Custer Memorial at the battle site and wrote a book on the fallen hero. In 1889, he organized a cavalry unit for the National Guard in New York, designated Troop A. In 1895, a trolley strike in Brooklyn resulted in rioting. Troop A was called in to restore law and order. For eight days the men patrolled the Brooklyn streets during blizzard conditions, setting bonfires in the street and sleeping on the hard floor of a factory. This bronze was produced to commemorate their successful deployment and mission. The sculptor, Giuseppe Moretti (1857-1935) emigrated to America from Italy and became famous for his public monuments and flamboyant personality. The statue displays well, but we must note some condition issues which may be repairable. There is one missing spur on Roe's left boot. The rein in his left hand is detached, although it will stay in place when properly positioned. The statue is affixed to the base by threaded posts in the bottom of the hooves. Right now, it is held in place by only the right rear hoof. The right front hoof is missing its threaded post. The left hooves have partial or truncated posts and do not lay flat on the base. They do not align with the holes in the base created for the purpose of attachment.
