    Description

Battle of Little Big Horn: A Soldier's Leather Shoe Found on the Battlefield. This shoe was legally collected in 1992 on the site of Major Marcus Reno's fight in the valley where he first assaulted Sitting Bull's camp. Unlike the federally-owned Custer massacre site, this land was privately owned. This shoe is identified as a model 1872 infantry shoe, so it is unlikely that it was worn by one of Reno's men. Potentially it was discarded by one of the infantry troops who arrived at the site shortly after the battle, or quite possibly it had been worn by an Indian who had obtained it earlier from a slain soldier. In deteriorated condition, as one would expect after it's being exposed to the elements for over a century, it is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Jason Pitsch, President, Reno Battlefield Museum. A rarely-seen type of Indian Wars battlefield relic.
