    Albumen View of "Camp at Ft. Custer 1879". Crisp 3 7/8" X 4 3/4" albumen image in perfect condition, on the original 6 1/2" X 8 1/2" mount. Shows three tents with what appears to be both cavalrymen and Indians, with a wagon with four horse team in the background. Period ID on the verso, Sept 2nd Camp at Ft. Custer" with penciled date 1879. Fort Custer was built in 1877, on the Big Horn River, near the present day town of Hardin, Montana. During the period of this image the 2nd US Cavalry occupied the fort. It was from Ft. Custer, in 1879, that Capt. George Sanderson was sent to police the Custer battlefield and rebury any exposed remains. The fort was closed in 1898. Rare Custer related image and, again, likely unknown and unpublished.
