Absolutely Exquisite 1879 Pen and Ink Rendering of Fort D. A. Russell, Wyoming Terr. The fort was established in 1867 to protect workers for the Union Pacific Railroad. The fort was named for Union Gen. David Allen Russell who was killed during the Civil War at the Battle of Opequon, Va. In 1879 the fort was manned by Company H of the 2nd U. S. Cavalry. The drawing is 4 7/8" X 81/2" and in perfect condition with the exception of a slightly 'ragged' left edge where it was clearly removed form a sketch book. Identification and date at lower left. Signed by a member of the 2nd US Cavalry at lower right, although the precise name is difficult to discern. Absolutely incredible detail, showing over 80 individual buildings along with wagon, cannons, troopers etc. American flag flying near the center is nicely colored with ink. Unknown, unpublished, and an important document related to the American military presence in the Wyoming Territory.
