A Rare Group of Two Reigart Relics from the Franklin Arctic Relief Expedition. A 3 1/4" X 4 1/2" card on which is mounted a 3 1/2" section of multi strand heavy waxed rope with the following ink inscription, "Piece of the Rigging of the U. S. Arctic Exploring Schooner "United States. Sent to the Arctic Regions by the U. S. Government in search of Sir John Franklin. Under command of Dr. Hayes A.D. 1860 & 1861". A piece of turned oak 5/8" high, 1 1/2" diameter at the top and 1 13/16" diameter at the base with ink script paper lable affixed to the bottom "The British Arctic Relief Vessel The Resolute Went in Search of Sir John Franklin Abandoned May 15, 1854." Despite a number of searches for Franklin's lost 1845 expedition, only traces of the Expedition were ever found with Franklin and all 128 men who accompanied him presumed lost. It was not until 1981 that a scientific expedition learned the details of the fate of the expedition. Only a handful of existing artifacts are extant from this tragic British Arctic expedition.
