Very rare, only example noted.
32 WCF Rifle, over 16 Gauge Shotgun, by G. W. Harder, Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Bearing the Patent Date of June 9, 1885. George Washington Harder is listed as working in Williamsport from 1885 to 1890. He was the son of Jacob Harder of Lock Haven, Pa., who filed this patent, #319,482, for a breechloading firearm. Signature and patent date both die stamped on the top flat of the barrel. 32" superposed octagon barrels, with brass blade front sight and V notch rear. The rather intricate mechanism, which includes an ejector, is actuated by a button on the left side of the receiver. Back action locks, two triggers. All metal retains much of the original acid brown finish, mixing with smooth age brown patina, very fine. Mint bores, mechanically perfect. Checkered, pistol grip walnut stock, with just a couple of minor dents, else perfect. German silver trigger guard, butt plate, and elaborate toeplate, all perfect with nice patina. The central Pennsylvania Harder family was renowned, from 1860 to the latter part of the 19th century, for their production of multi barrel weapons, with specimens known with as many as five barrels. Although rarely flamboyant, their guns were well known as sturdy serviceable weapons, which resulted in the family having a long and prolific career. While percussion weapons produced by the family are often encountered this is the first example of this unique form we've seen.Auction Info
