[George A. Custer]: Col. H. J. Slocum Little Big Horn Ephemera.
Group of items related to Colonel Herbert Jermain Slocum (1855-1928), a career cavalryman who was assigned to the 7th Cavalry after dropping out of West Point in 1876. He continued to serve in the Indian Territories, the Spanish-American War, the Philippines and commanded troops at the Battle of Columbus, New Mexico vs. Pancho Villa, in 1916. The lot includes a custom-bound copy of "The Cavalry Journal" for July 1926 containing an article on the Little Big Horn (gold-stamped "Custer's Last Fight 1876" on the cover and "Custer" on the spine). Slocum has signed it twice, including on the magazine cover ("H. J. Slocum Col. U.S.A. Retired. 'of Cavalry' an Excellent Account [of the Battle]." There are twelve postcard-size photographs of the 1926 ceremonies at Little Big Horn designated "Burying the Hatchet" on the 50th anniversary of the battle. Slocum has made identifications and notations on the back of each photo. There is also a Christmas card "from the Godfreys" which Slocum has signed and used as a caption card for the photos ("Custer Battle Field Reunion Montana June 1926. Fiftieth Anniversary of the Battle." We've never seen these photos before - they could possibly be unpublished.
