    Description

Identified Civil War Grouping Including a Rare Pair of India Rubber Waterproof 'Mud Boots', and India Rubber Gun Case and a Pair of Deerskin Moccasins. These extremely rare articles of Civil War Accoutrements, identified to a soldier in the 44th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. All three items are from the Civil War collection of the Stamatelos Brothers of Massachusetts and are identified to Private George G. Barker of Company 'D", 44 th Massachusetts Infantry. Barker was a 19 year old clerk in Bedford, MA when he enlisted on Aug. 29, 1862 for a period of nine months. Private Barker served as company forager before he was honorably discharged for sickness at Readville, MA on 18 June 1863. Barker's pair of vulcanized 'mud boots' is termed a white variation of the vulcanization process and made with tan colored, drill cloth material that sandwiches the rubber article.
Each 'mud boot' is hip-length and when worn over the trousers, these large-size, two piece 'mud boots' covered the legs from toe to thigh and provided protection to the wearer in inclement weather. These step in accoutrements are slightly tapered at the ankle / foot area, then billow out at the calf and thigh. Each wader measures 38" long from the top to the toe, 12" wide at the top, 7" wide at the ankle and has a bottom sole for the foot. Each has an attached rubber-covered loop strap that is connected with a long, narrow loop strap for around the waist. Rubber waders are in excellent original condition overall. Original tan cloth surface material remains excellent save for scattered areas of light to moderate staining and three spots of cloth wear -through at the toe area. Both pants retain black ink, handwritten inscription of "G.G. Barker / Co D" marked at the upper edge of each boot. A large, circular maker's mark in red ink read "10" ( size)/ the initials "I.R.G. Co" all enclosed in a large letter "G" indicating Goodyear's India Rubber Glove Co."Goodyear marking are lightly faded but in excellent condition.
Barker's pair of unmarked deerskin leather moccasins is in excellent condition and served top protect his legs while he was foraging and hunting in the woods for food. Each moccasin is 15" high, 7" wide at the ankle and 9" wide at the calf. Both light brown/ tan leather mocs are still flexible and soft to the touch. Footpad/sole area is of the same leather but has been reinforced with addition al layers of leather inside to make a stiffer sole. A single, narrow leather strap with iron buckle and clasp is sewn to the moccasin to adjust the tightness. All stitching is very tight with no weak areas. Leather panels are flexible and exhibit no rips, tears or holes. Probably could be worn today with a little care. These same moccasins are featured in the Time Life Series titled " Echoes of Glory, Arms and Equipment of the Union" on page 192. The third item is Barker's India-rubber gun case that is stamped on the inside top flap with "Co. D/ 44."Opposite flap is maker's marked reads "National India Rubber Co. / Providence, RI." The unit stamping is in dark black ink while the red ink maker's stamp is very light but readable. The black India rubber slip case is 72" long and is brittle in areas. Suffers from light cracking and some edge flaking. Case has one small perforation and one period repair patch visible. This original and quite possibly, the only surviving specimen of identified Civil War waders constitute a wonderful addition to any Civil War era cloth collection or or a soldier's personal display.

    More Information:

Vulcanization, discovered by inventor and experimentor Charles Goodyear in 1839, involved treating crude rubber with various checmicals and heat to give the rubber multiple features such as stability, elasticity, flexability and strength. The vulcanization process allowed a number of useful articles of waterproof clothing to be manufactured, such as shoes, coats, hats , blankets, boots and miscellaneous other items.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
