Horstmann Contract Civil War Period Thirty-Five Star American Flag. 120" fly x 72" hoist. Canton 42" x 36". Seldom does one encounter maker-marked flags from the Civil War period as is this beautiful example marked "Best Bunting/ 10 Feet Long" and "Horstmann/ Philadelphia" on the hoist near the canton on the reverse side. The flag is entirely hand sewn and the field is composed of individually attached 5" wide wool stripes. Thirty-five 5½" cotton stars are individually attached on each side of the wool canton. The flag is reinforced at the corners where it joins the hoist with an extra layer of wool. Five 7/8" brass grommets run the length of the 3" wide cotton hoist. Horstmann and their competitor William Mintzer both utilized brass grommets on their Civil War period flags made from button dies. The flag remains in remarkably good condition with some tenderness to the wool at the hoist and a few trivial tears. The thirty-five star flag was made official on July 4, 1863 with the admission of West Virginia to the Union. It remained the official flag until July 4, 1865 with the admission of Nevada to the Union.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
