    Description

HOME OF A REBEL SHARPSHOOTER, GETTYSBURG (No. 41). This renowned image of a fallen Confederate "sharpshooter" in Devil's Den has become one of the most recognizable pictures from the war's most famous battle. Gardner wrote that he took the image on July 4, pointing out that the "little white spots" on the rock to the left showed "how our sharpshooters and infantry had tried to dislodge him." A fragment from an exploding shell apparently gave him his mortal wound. Mount measures 12.5 by 10.75 inches and the images is 9 by 7 inches with very good clarity and contrast. Dated 1866 and noted "Alex. Gardner, Photographer" with the date taken: "July, 1863." Very historic.
