Historic Archive of Flags and Related Material From the Cruiser USS Baltimore (C-3), Circa 1891-1918. The USS Baltimore was laid down in May of 1887 and launched in October, 1888, ultimately commissioned in January, 1890. She saw much service in her reasonably short career. She served as the flagship of the North Atlantic Squadron, she participated in the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War, she performed mine-laying duties during WWI, after the war received the designation CM-1, and served as a receiving ship at Pearl Harbor. She was present at the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. She was scrapped in 1842 due to her hulk status. This remarkable archive includes: (1) Spanish-American War era U.S. Navy National Ensign measuring approximately 80" x 135", the canton measuring about 43" x 75". The flag is wool, with 45 printed stars in the canton and individually sewn red and white stripes. The cotton canvas hoist is marked: "USS BALTIMORE" on one side and "U.S. ENSIGN NO. 6 NAVY YARD NY SEPT. 1898". The flag has a few moderate size holes, snags and tears but is in remarkably good shape for its size and age. The cotton canvas on the hoist side has torn exposing most of the halyard, still the markings are clearly legible. (2) WWI era U.S. Navy Small Boat flag measuring approximately 35" x 66", the canton measuring 18" x 25.5". The flag is constructed of wool and features thirteen 4.5" white stars sewn to the canton and sewn red and white stripes. The hoist side is fitted with four metal grommets and is marked "U.S. BOAT FLAG NO. 10 NAVY YARD NEW YORK MAY 1915" on one side and " USS BALTIMORE" on the other. This example is in very good condition with a few scattered holes and a few contemporary repairs. Boat flags were discontinued around WWI. (3) U.S. Navy enlisted seaman's hat, dark blue wool, with a "USS BALTIMORE" cap tally. The hat has a blue-and-white checkerboard lining and there appears to be a named inked in, though it is illegible. The cap tally is sewn in a unique flamboyant way with the ends gathered at the side. Excellent condition. (4) Spanish-American War-era book: Spanish-American War. 1898. The U.S.S. Baltimore at the Battle of Manila Bay, Philippine Islands. May 1st, 1898. Printed in Hong Kong by Kelly & Walsh, Limited, 1898. Octavo. 40 pages. Illustrated and including a large fold-out map titled "Battle of Manila Bay May 1, 1898". Maroon cloth over stiff boards with an illustration of the Baltimore and titles stamped in gilt on the front cover. Spine panel lacking, boards a bit loose, otherwise internally clean and complete. (5) WWI era-book: The Northern Barrage Mine Force United States Atlantic Fleet The North Sea 1918. Published by the U.S. Naval Institute, Annapolis, Maryland, 1919. 127 pages. Profusely illustrated. Very good condition. (6) Souvenir booklet: The White Squadron of the U.S. Navy. Published in New York by James Clarke, from the Trans-Atlantic Series, Volume I, No. 2, June 9th, 1894. (7) Souvenir booklet: The White Squadron, copyright 1891 by the Woolson Spice Company. Ten tinted illustrations of ships of the Great White Squadron, including the Baltimore. Excellent condition. (8) Beautiful 7.75" x 5" photogravure image titled "Langley Point Battery After Engagement With the "Baltimore"". Fine condition. (9) Twenty-page illustrated story extracted from Scribner's Magazine, circa October 1890, titled "From Port to Port With the White Squadron" by Rufus Fairchild Zogbaum. Very good condition. (10) tinted lithograph, 11" x 9", captioned "U.S.S. Baltimore". Fine condition. (11) Harper's Weekly August 11, 1894 issue with Great White Squadron cover. Very good. (12) Original framed black-and-white photograph of the Baltimore, framed and matted under glass to an overall size of 10" x 8", sight area 5.5" x 3.25". Excellent condition.
