High Grade Presentation M1872 Cavalry Officer's Saber. Etched on the obverse of the 34" blade "From Co. H Second Regt. R I. M. to Major Peter A Sweeney July 1899", the etching also incorporates scroll work and an American flag, all on a gold washed background, only traces of which remain. The reverse of the blade incorporates scroll work, flag panoplies, and spread wing eagle, with the maker's logo, John McManus & Co./ Providence, R. I., at the base of the blade. Overall the blade is generally smooth and gray, with deep etching and just some scattered salt and peppering. The form of the guard is unique in our experience and incorporates three branches with a closed basket which includes flag panoplies, a laurel wreath and an eagle perched on a circle in the center. Shell and floral decoration cast into the underside of the guard and the quillon features an eagle perched on a shield. Deep relief leaves cast where the guard enters the pommel and the pommel cap exhibits a helmeted warrior on the face, with a full bodied eagle perched on the top. Hilt retains 90% of the original gilt, really exceptional. Sharkskin grip and coiled brass wire wrap perfect. The nickel plated scabbard utilizes heavy cast brass mounts with multiple piercings, with all mounts being double sided and 5½" long. All mounts retain 98% of the original gilt. Scabbard with just one small shallow dent, negligible. The sword is accompanied by much supporting material related to Sweeney, most of it dealing with his business as the largest military tailor in Providence, and includes a wonderful cabinet card of a dog standing on a pedestal hawking Sweeney's wares. Sweeney had a lengthy term of service with the Rhode Island Militia and was instrumental in organizing and mobilizing Rhode Island forces for the Spanish American War. A most impressive M1872 presentation saber.
