High Grade Presentation M1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword. The sword is overall in mint condition. 31" blade triangular in cross section, the obverse bearing the following inscription on a gold washed background, "Presented to Lieut. Alfred S. Orchard by the Members of Co. D 23rd Regt. N.G.S.N.Y. July 10th 1893". The inscription is also highlighted by scroll work and arms panoplies. The obverse of the blade features a U.S. with scroll work and arms panoplies, also on a gold washed background, with maker's logo, Ridabock & Co. New York, N. Y. at the base. All etching is highlighted with delicate hand engraving. Regulation style hilt with folding counterguard retains 100% of the original gilt. White metal, possibly silver, grip mint with all of the twisted brass wire wrap. Nickel plated scabbard with elaborate pierced cast brass mounts, brass throat, all perfect. Orchard had served as a member of the N.G.S.N.Y. since 1880 and commanded Company D of the 23rd Regt. In 1898 he was appointed by the Governor of New York to organize and mobilize forces for the Spanish American War. A most impressive sword in truly remarkable condition.
