Henry Wager Halleck. Three Autograph Letters Signed.
"H. W. Halleck."1) ALS addressed to the commanding officer at Otterville, Missouri, with a command to intercept Confederate rebels attempting to advance into Union territory. One page of Department of the Missouri Head Quarters letterhead, 8.5" x 5.25", St. Louis; January 6, 1862. Halleck, serving as a major general over the Department of Missouri at the time, had great success in early 1862 in pushing the Confederates out of Missouri and into Arkansas, while maintaining large swaths of Tennessee. 2) ALS addressed to Brigadier General George Washington Cullum in Cairo, Illinois, consisting of a brief note written in cipher. One page, 8" x 5.25", St. Louis; February 16, 1862. Cullum was Halleck's chief of staff at the time of writing. A series of effaced numbers at the foot of the note may have been used to decode the cipher. 3) ALS addressed to the Honorable Milton Slocum Latham, member of the U. S. Senate, in response to a query about army promotion. One page on Head Quarters of the Army letterhead, 8" x 5", Washington, D. C.; Dec. 26, [18]62. At this point in his career, Halleck had been promoted to General-in-Chief of all Union armies, a position he held until early 1864.

Condition: flattened folds, some light rumpling and soiling from handling; tiny chip at foot of second letter; ends of a couple of folds just starting to split.
